The International Bujinkan Dojo Association

Our foundation at Taigun Taijutsu is deeply rooted in the International Bujinkan Dojo Association (IBDA). Formed as interest in Japanese martial arts expanded during the 1970s and 1980s, the IBDA united students from across the globe who sought to train directly under Hatsumi. These dedicated practitioners established Bujinkan dojos in their home countries, creating a worldwide network.

The IBDA is dedicated to preserving the teachings of the Bujinkan Honbu Dojo, promoting authentic instruction from qualified instructors, connecting affiliated dojos globally, and encouraging ongoing training with senior Japanese instructors and the Honbu Dojo in Japan. Today, it stands as one of the world's largest organizations committed to traditional Japanese martial arts, with thousands of practitioners in over 50 countries.

The nine traditional schools (Ryūha)

What sets Taigun Taijutsu apart is our comprehensive curriculum, which preserves nine historical martial traditions inherited by Hatsumi. These include Togakure Ryū Ninpō Taijutsu, Gyokko Ryū Kosshijutsu, Kotō Ryū Koppōjutsu, Kukishinden Ryū Happō Bikenjutsu, Takagi Yōshin Ryū Jūtaijutsu, Shinden Fudō Ryū Dakentaijutsu, Gikan Ryū Koppōjutsu, Gyokushin Ryū Ninpō, and Kumogakure Ryū Ninpō.

These traditions encompass both samurai and shinobi (ninja) lineages, offering a rich study of unarmed combat, various weapons, strategic thinking, nuanced body movement, heightened awareness, and profound personal development. Within the Bujinkan, students at Taigun Taijutsu study these schools collectively under the discipline known as Budō Taijutsu, while advanced practitioners have the opportunity to explore each ryūha individually for deeper mastery.

Beyond combat: Cultivating character and adaptability

At Taigun Taijutsu, we align with Hatsumi's consistent emphasis that Bujinkan training is not solely about self-defense or combat. Our philosophy extends far beyond physical techniques, aiming to cultivate character, adaptability, discipline, and compassion. We teach the invaluable skill of avoiding conflict whenever possible, instilling the belief that true martial skill lies in protecting life rather than taking it.

Our training comprehensively includes Taijutsu (body movement and unarmed techniques), joint locks and throws, striking methods, traditional Japanese weapons, strategy and battlefield principles, situational awareness, and crucial mental and spiritual development. These elements are woven together to provide a holistic martial arts experience.

"The training at Taigun Taijutsu has profoundly changed my perspective on martial arts. It's not just about techniques; it's about developing a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me."
